Dark Dreams (1994)

Dou Wei’s first solo effort. He shocked everyone to leave the up-and-rising pop-rock band, Black Panther to begin his own music experiment. And the change was not merely in the surface, he cut his long hair said goodbye to the hair-metal and delved into darkwave.

The result is “Dark Dreams” album, heavily influenced by Bauhaus and Cure. The whole album is dark and moody, with the drum churning like a slow fire burning. And his vocal style was quite a contrast to his Black Panther days, no longer filled with youth anger and adolescence spirit, he lowered his voice and often use it as a piece of instrument. In the track “God Bless”, his voice mimicking the drum beat to create a melancholy atmosphere. The whole album is dark and moody, only the funkier, Reggae-ish, “Oh! Be good” shed some light.

Overall, "Dark Dreams" marks Dou Wei's post-punk-gothic era.
